Summer Internship in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
NorthWest Research Associates (NWRA) is seeking an advanced undergraduate student at CU Boulder to participate in an NSF-sponsored research project that aims to improve our understanding of the nature and consequences of mesoscale vortex interactions during the development of a tropical cyclone. During a paid summer internship, the student will most likely help run and analyze numerical simulations using a state-of-the-art weather research model on a high performance supercomputer. Additional responsibilities may include preparing a written report and an oral presentation on key scientific findings. The ideal applicant will have firm understandings of classical mechanics, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics at the undergraduate level. Completed course work in dynamical meteorology or physical oceanography would be desirable, but is not required. Basic skills in computing and applied mathematics will be essential for a successful internship.
The internship is expected to run for 11-12 consecutive weeks with a flexible start date no sooner than May 16, 2018. A longer duration may be possible if employment is reduced from full-time to part-time. Applications should include a 1-2 page cover letter explaining relevant interests and qualifications, an electronic transcript, and contact information for 2 university faculty members (or other qualified individuals) willing to provide letters of recommendation upon request. Those interested should send their applications to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject header "GFD Internship Application", preferably by March 30, 2018. The position will remain open until the advertisement is removed from our website at jobs.nwra.com.
The Boulder office of NWRA is located on the north side of the city, virtually next door to the Foothills Laboratory of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. NWRA is an Equal Opportunity Employer, M/F/V/D.
NWRA always welcomes career discussions with scientists seeking their own government support for basic and applied research.
NWRA will not discharge or in any other manner discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because such employee or applicant has inquired about, discussed, or disclosed the compensation of the employee or applicant or another employee or applicant. This provision shall not apply to instances in which an employee who has access to the compensation information of other employees or applicants as a part of such employee's essential job functions discloses the compensation of such other employees or applicants to individuals who do not otherwise have access to such information, unless such disclosure is in response to to a formal complaint or charge, in furtherance of an investigation, proceeding, hearing or action, including an investigation conducted by the employer, or is consistent with the federal contractor's legal duty to furnish information. -Executive Order 13665
